We hear a lot about the UW Marine Biology field station located at Friday Harbor Labs (FHL). FHL provides an immersive field opportunity for our students and others interested in marine science, and is located right on our doorstep in the Salish Sea. Maddie Brooks, recent Marine Biology graduate, took over our Instagram for a day to share her FHL experiences including orca research and fish necropsy.

I love getting to share my island home for the summer, and showing off the awesome things going on over at Friday Harbor Labs, and so taking over the UW Marine Biology Instagram for a day was such a fun experience! Though I graduated in June this year, it’s great to be back and answer all your questions about living and working at FHL.

Fish necropsy at FHL

I’ve been lucky enough to spend two summers here on San Juan Island and continue my research with Southern Resident Killer whales and how vessels impact their behaviors, as well as completing my integrative field experience with the Marbio 488 class. Living and learning in such an incredible community here on the island is an experience I’ll always remember, and there’s a bunch of different ways you can get involved! Signing up for spring, summer, or fall courses, learning more about the labs set up here at FHL or applying for the GEODUC program for transfer students looking to get involved with marine science.

Following accounts like @uw_environment_undergrads can keep you posted about all of these awesome opportunities, plus make sure to keep an eye out on the Marine Biology Opportunities page. If you’ve got any questions about my research, living at the labs, UW in general, please feel free to reach out to me on Instagram: @maddie_not_again
