Director’s Welcome

Welcome! I am pleased that you are visiting our Marine Biology website at the University of Washington, and I invite you to dive in and learn more about our program.

We are proud to offer a major that prepares our students for the opportunities and challenges they will face in their future careers. Our program promotes a deep understanding of core concepts in the biological and marine sciences, while providing opportunities to specialize in areas of interest. To this end, our students study across a broad range of rigorous and highly experiential marine science courses at all academic levels, and our emphasis on immersive learning provides creative avenues to build career skills in the field. Our marine field station at Friday Harbor Laboratories gives unparalleled access to study the diverse ecosystems of the Salish Sea, providing integrative learning opportunities that are foundational in Marine Biology.  Simply put, the Marine Biology Major educates our students to be regionally and globally responsive, with an emphasis on discovery and solution-driven science.

On a personal note, I feel very honored to be the Director of the Marine Biology program.  Our highly engaged students, faculty, staff and community are exceptional. Our degree integrates the educational experiences and traditions of three Academic units that have a very high standing, and the ability to provide a diverse and deep cross-disciplinary undergraduate education in marine sciences is rare. Importantly, our partnerships with our community of tribal, federal, state, and local agencies, as well as NGOs and industry, provides our students with direct opportunities to learn outside traditional settings. It is a privilege to work with our community every day.

If you are here at the University of Washington and inquisitive about our program, drop by and visit us. If you are already part of our thriving community, we are delighted to be working and collaborating with you. If you not yet here, visit us, we would thoroughly enjoy showing you why we are an outstanding place to study.
