The Kraken Awakes: science fiction and the ocean. Creating your narrative (OCEAN 497 C)
This course is centered on shared discussions and working groups exploring different hard science fiction notions of future oceans. In addition, we may imagine how the Norse and Greek gods (Kraken, Aegir, Neptune, etc) might be resurrected and create different imaginary worlds in the Earth’s oceans.

We are hosting an information session for the NOAA Hollings Scholarship on Wednesday, November 30th at 4:30pm in FSH 207. Freshmen and Sophomores are encouraged to attend. Sophomores already intending to apply for the Hollings this round may benefit from this information session, though we will have a short series of more targeted workshops to help these students with applications starting December 7th.

2023 Seasonal Vessel Operator/Educator Opening
The Soundwatch Boater Education Program is seeking a vessel operator for the 2023 summer field season. Soundwatch is a research, education and monitoring program operated by The Whale Museum (TWM), a not-for-profit organization located in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island in Washington State. The Soundwatch program mission is to reduce vessel disturbance to marine wildlife, particularly the endangered Southern Resident killer whales, in the Salish Sea region of Washington State (USA) and British Columbia (Canada).

In honor of Caroline Gibson’s enduring love and commitment to the Salish Sea, the Northwest Straits Foundation is pleased to invite applications for the Caroline Gibson Scholarship in Marine Studies.
Scholarships support current college students pursuing applied academic studies in marine science, policy, education and management of the Salish Sea.
Three scholarships of $3,500 will be awarded to undergraduate or graduate students in the Puget Sound region including British Columbia.

This film chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists.
The showing of the film will be on Thursday, November 3 at Noon at the Ethnic Cultural Center Auditorium on the University of Washington campus, or you may view the film on your own time via various streaming services.
