These are scholarships that don’t see as many applicants, even though we know UW students are deeply engaged and active in their communities, so hopefully with encouragement from trusted advisers and mentors, we can encourage them to learn more and apply!

Mary Gates Leadership Scholarships – $5,000 for UW undergrads actively engaged in any kind of project, effort, community work, club, etc.

FHL Info Sessions – Oct. 23, 24 & 26!

Fiona Curliss, the adviser at Friday Harbor Labs (FHL), will be in town next week!  She will be on the Seattle Campus on Monday, Oct. 23, Tuesday, Oct. 24, and the morning of Thursday, Oct. 26.   Pema Kitaeff, the Friday Harbor Labs Diving Officer, will also be joining the Tuesday Information Session to talk about Diving.
Remember that almost all Marine Biology Majors will study at FHL for 3-10 weeks in order to graduate, so come to an Info Session to plan ahead!

Abalone Biologist, Washington Dept. of Fish and Wildlife (Western WA)

These permanent journey-level professional biologists work in the Fish Program on the Subtidal Shellfish Dive Team. Aid in the recovery of Washington State endangered Pinto abalone through active restoration, research, and outreach. Specifically, these positions will conduct wild SCUBA abalone surveys, juvenile stocking and monitoring, outplant site scouting, adult broodstock assessment and collection, operate and maintain vessels, and fulfill needs at our partner hatchery facility.

Marine Science Instructor – Catalina Island Marine Institute CA

CIMI instructors are responsible for providing quality instruction and leadership in the educational outdoor science programs at CIMI. This entails providing the proper curriculum, ensuring all programs are conducted in accordance with set policies, and developing educational and instructional programs to ensure the high standards of the program. Marine Science Instructors lead groups of up to 16 students through 3- or 5-day overnight field trips. These trips involve teaching students about marine science and island ecology in experiential science labs, as well as taking students snorkeling, kayaking, and hiking. Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI) operates a fall and a spring season serving students in grades 4-12, with opportunities for instructors to stay on and work for the summer camp programs as well. CIMI operates two facilities (Fox Landing and Toyon Bay) on the leeward side of Catalina Island in Southern California, with ideal conditions for ocean recreation and island adventure.
