KAUST’s Marine Science program will be hosting a three-week summer course from July 21 to August 8, 2019. The course will highlight a range of topics relevant to the Red Sea Research Center’s work, including genomics, microbiology, ecology, environmental science, and biological oceanography. Several KAUST faculty will be participating. The course will consist of a combination of lectures, fieldwork, labwork, and data analysis workshops, with an emphasis on hands-on experiences.

PAC-ISLEs is a 3-year NSF funded program with the goal of creating international research experiences for students. Each student involved in PAC-ISLEs will participate in a year-long research program punctuated by an overseas research experience in America Samoa, Tonga, or Pohnpei, where they will study the history (anthropological and biological) and connectivity (historic and contemporary) of indigenous cultures and fish communities across Pacific islands.

Exploration of the great biodiversity of one of the most pristine Amazonian rainforest, and of the use of natural resources in the Andes of Peru

Applications are now open for the Exploration Seminar, Natural and Cultural History of Costa Rica.  This course is a 5 credit Study Abroad course (see notes below about credits) and the travel dates fall in between Summer and Autumn quarters (Program dates: 8/27/19 – 9/19/19). The course is led by Drs. John Marzluff and Patrick Tobin, and graduate student Robert Tournay.

While SEA Semester programs are not run by the University of Washington, the UW School of Oceanography affiliates with their programs such that you can earn UW Oceanography credit (OCEAN 496) for their courses, and they can then be applied to degree program requirements. Ask the marine biology adviser for more information about how these courses can apply to your Marine Biology major requirements.

Each summer, BIOS offers a suite of courses for both undergraduate and graduate students that capitalizes upon the expertise of our faculty and visiting scientists. These courses, listed below, provide many students the opportunity to study topics in marine science that might not be offered within the curricula of their home institutions. Each course comprises lectures, laboratory exercises, and complementary field components that build upon what is learned in the classroom. Partial scholarships may be available to all students.

UW Exploration seminar traveling to Micronesia (Kosrae): Students in this field-based Exploration Seminar in Kosrae will study & conduct ecological assessments of coral, mangrove & seagrass habitats to understand how development and climate change are impacting the largely pristine coastal ecosystems of this remote island.
