We spoke to Lauren Walthour, a UW Marine Biology student, taking part in a study abroad semester in Australia. Find out about her studies, research abroad experiences and what inspired her to pursue a marine biology major.
Dolphins, dreams and marine biology
I am participating in the semester long study abroad called SIT (School for International Training) Australia: Rainforest, Reef, and Ecology program. 

Created by a graduate from UC Santa Bárbara – Bren School of Environmental Science & Management, BIOMA has provided to over one thousand university students worldwide with a two-week academic & high quality sea turtle experiential learning and hands-on research experience.

The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) is accepting applications for three summer courses scheduled for 2022. This popular suite of university-level summer courses, designed to immerse an international cohort of students in an intensive 3-week program of coursework and research that is unique in marine science education. Founded in 1903, BIOS is a world-class ocean science research and education facility. BIOS summer courses provide undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to expand their studies into subtropical environments and/or to investigate topics in ocean science, which are not offered within the curricula of their home institutions.

If you are interested in food systems, farm-to-table practices, sustainability, or climate change — this is the program for you! We will start our trip in Florence, head south to a private villa in Montepulciano for two weeks, and wrap up the trip at the UW Rome Center. We will take daily excursions to meet with local farmers and artisans and play an active part in the production process.

In this field-based Exploration Seminar we will study & conduct ecological assessments of coral,
mangrove & seagrass habitats to understand how development and climate change are impacting the largely pristine coastal ecosystems of a small Micronesian island.Credits can apply to major and minor requirements in Marine Biology. Application deadline is February 15, 2020.

Cape RADD facilitates a 2 week and 4 week field course for students who want to learn more about the marine environment, conservation and research through hands on field experience and diver development.

Learn more about SEA Semester: an independently run study abroad program with some courses pre-approved to apply towards the Marine Biology Major. SEA takes students onboard a 134’ tall ship to study the ocean, coastal communities, marine policy and conservation.

There will be a SEA Semester representative visiting campus on Monday, April 22.  He will hold an information session, 2:00-3:00pm in the Marine Sciences Building, Room 123.  Please come by if you can.
