Gilman-McCain Scholarship

The John S. McCain International Scholarship for Military Families (Gilman-McCain Scholarship) is a congressionally funded initiative of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State and named after the late senator John S. McCain from Arizona.
The John S. McCain International Scholarship for Military Families (Gilman-McCain Scholarship) provides awards of $5,000 for child and spousal dependents of active or activated United States military personnel during the time of application (including Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, Army, Army National Guard, Army Reserve, Coast Guard, Coast Guard Reserve, Marine Corps, Marine Corps Reserve, Navy, Navy Reserve, Space Force, NOAA Commissioned Corps, and USPHS Commissioned Corps) to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs.

“Environmental Paris: the modern Invention of Nature” is an immersive, interdisciplinary study abroad program sponsored by the Department of Comparative History of Ideas and the Department of Landscape Architecture.
This program offers you a chance to explore this modern “Invention of Nature” from three different perspectives: historical-scientific, urban sustainability, and literary-artistic.
Program activities include lectures and discussions, explorations of Paris’s Urban & natural landscapes, its gardens and architecture, museums visit within and outside Paris, as well as literary and visual representations of the shifting imagination of Nature.

A summer of personal and professional growth: studying abroad in the Philippines

Research Experience for Undergraduate (REU) Programs offer students a unique opportunity to take part in research related to their field of study. Involved in the Philippines-IRES (International Research Experience for Students) this summer was UW Marine Biology senior, Grace Davis. Funded under an NSF award, the program is led by the Old Dominion University and Texas A&M Corpus Christi University and provides students with an independent research project with Filipino mentors from the Silliman University (SU) in the Philippines, with a focus on fisheries impacts on marine biodiversity.

This popular suite of university-level summer courses, designed to immerse an international cohort of students in an intensive 3-week program of coursework and research that is unique in marine science education. Founded in 1903, BIOS is a world-class ocean science research and education facility. These courses, listed below, provide undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to expand their studies into subtropical environments and/or to investigate topics in ocean science, which are not offered within the curricula of their home institutions. BIOS has quick and easy access to a diverse array of subtropical marine habitats and ocean locations which, combined with lectures, discussions and integrated field work and laboratory exercises, provide an optimal environment for experiential learning.

I’m emailing you to mention that the Marine Institute in Galway, Ireland, has recently announced its 2023  summer bursary program. It’s an annual summer internship program aimed at giving undergraduates the opportunity to gain skills in a variety of marine science related fields. Fields include Fisheries and fish sampling, Oceanography, Chemistry and GIS / bathymetric mapping (The full list of bursaries offered is attached below).
