This event launches the society as a community for everyone in the field of sustainability: researchers, students, policy-makers, and practitioners alike.
The NSS welcomes contributions that showcase scholarship on sustainability topics, as well as those that feature case studies, best practices, collaborative interdisciplinary or cross-sectoral projects, or other works that connect to the NSS conference themes and topics.
Planting Party with the UW Program on Climate Change on February 29th
Join the Program on Climate Change Undergraduate Cohort and the Society for Ecological Restoration for a planting party! This party will be held on Thursday February 29th from 3:00-4:30pm at the Heron Haven work site, near Drumheller fountain.
This a description of a typical work party:
Work parties typically involve the removal of invasive species (such as English ivy, Himalayan blackberry, and holly) and planting native species.
Aquatic Sciences Open House – Saturday, May 18th, 2024 from 10am – 4pm
Students Explore Aquatic Sciences (SEAS) is excited to announce our annual spring Aquatic Sciences Open House will be held on Saturday, May 18th, 2024 from 10am – 4pm.
The Open House is open to the public and offers a free and family-friendly day of hands-on learning to celebrate science and research that relates to water. Visitors can tour a research vessel and experience real working science labs here at the university.

Friday, January 19th, at 3:30 pm: Workshop on summer internships + research experiences
What are you doing this summer? I know winter quarter just started but applications for summer research opportunities have already posted and the deadlines start in February.
SAFS graduate student, Markus Min, is hosting a workshop to discuss how to find and apply for summer internships, research opportunities, and jobs on Friday, January 19th, at 3:30 pm in FSH 108. This workshop will help you navigate the world of summer opportunities for students in the aquatic sciences.
Workshops: NOAA Hollings Scholarship
We are hosting workshops this coming Winter Quarter on January 9th and January 23rd at 4:30 pm in FSH 203 for any UW students planning on applying to the NOAA Hollings Scholarship. The upcoming workshop sessions will be structured around applicants being paired with graduate student mentors to receive multiple rounds of feedback on the written components of the application, as well as help with filling out the rest of the application form.

Not Mars: Tools to Save Our Home Planet is a one-night, multi-speaker event, bringing together Patagonia’s activist heroes to share lessons learned, practical tips and personal stories to turn your climate anxiety into climate action. Hosted by journalist Yessenia Funes, this special event will inspire seasoned and newly curious activists with inspiring conversations from a diverse group of speakers, including community organizer Nikkita Oliver, author Bonnie Tsui, climate activist Jamie Henn and surfer and ocean advocate Greg Long among others.
