Permanent Fish Biologist Position at NWFSC Stock Assessment Group

The Northwest Fisheries Science Center is recruiting for a permanent Fish Biologist (Stock Assessment), ZP 482-3 or ZP 482-4, located in Seattle, Washington or Newport, Oregon. This position plays a key role in producing high quality stock assessments and advancing quantitative fishery science that supports sustainable fisheries management.

Position Highlights

The successful candidate will:

  • Lead high impact stock assessments for West Coast groundfish species, including developing population dynamics models, conducting quantitative analyses, running simulation tests, and preparing assessment reports.
  • Conduct research on the drivers of fish population change and incorporate emerging data types such as omics into stock assessments. Research topics may include changes in species distribution, productivity, mortality, stock boundaries, age structure, abundance, bycatch impacts, and ecosystem processes that influence West Coast groundfish.
  • Innovate with data and code by developing or contributing to R packages, processing pipelines, spatiotemporal indices, and state of the art stock assessment tools including R, TMB, SS, ADMB, and FIMS.
  • Communicate research through peer reviewed publications, technical reports, and presentations to scientific review bodies, fishery managers, and stakeholders. The scientist will also represent NWFSC in outreach, working groups, and advisory roles.
