Pacific Northwest Research Institute (PNRI) is seeking a Research Technician I for our Metzger Lab who will focus on understanding the spread and evolution of a bivalve transmissible cancer. We are seeking a candidate who will be responsible for DNA extraction, qPCR, tissue culture, plasmid purification, maintenance of clams, clam experiments, and other lab duties. This collaborative, hands-on role is aligned to PNRI’s mission to discover new pathways for diagnosing, treating, and preventing disease.

You will help to maintain the live bivalve facility, aid in field work and perform computational sequence analysis. Don’t have field work or computational sequence analysis experience? No worries!  You will gain it here as part of your career path in the Metzger Lab. You will prepare genomic and plasmid DNA, and may assist with various lab projects, including growth and transfection of vibrio cholera under BSL2 conditions.

The successful candidate will be able to work independently and carry out scientific techniques, procedures and research related to research goals of the Principal Investigator. Effective PNRI Research Technicians have at least one year of first-hand experience with laboratory research including tissue culture, DNA and RNA extraction, qPCR, and bioinformatics computational experience.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences or equivalent experience and/or education.
  • One or more years of experience as a Research Technician, undergraduate research assistant, or related laboratory experience with molecular biology and/or tissue culture.
  • 6 months+ genomics and bioinformatics computational experience, a plus.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
  • Successful track record of working collaboratively with others on group projects.
