What to Expect
As an Ocean Fisheries Port Sampler, you will support sustainable fisheries management by:
- Conducting port sampling for recreational and commercial fisheries.
- Collecting catch effort and biological data through angler interviews, catch examinations, onboard observations, and biological sampling.
- Applying sampling protocols and field procedures to ensure statistical validity of fishery data used for in-season quota management and harvest decisions.
- Recording and summarizing field data using electronic devices, software, and paper forms, and synchronizing data to external databases.
- Engaging professionally with sport, tribal, and commercial fishers to explain WDFW research, procedures, and objectives and to encourage cooperation in reporting marked fish, catch information, and fishing effort.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Option 1:
- High school graduation or GED, including one year of high school science
- Two years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1
Option 2:
- High school graduation or GED, including one year of school science
- Two years of laboratory or field experience assisting a biologist, chemist, or zoologist
Education Substitution:
College coursework in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely related fields may substitute year for year for experience, provided that coursework includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.
