LEAPS: Spring 2025 – How to prepare for life after graduation?

The LEAPS (LEarning And Professional Skills) program is back for Spring Quarter, and this quarter we’ll be focusing primarily on how to prepare for life after graduation by talking about what skills you’ll need in the workforce, how to develop those skills, and the types of opportunities (e.g., jobs, graduate school) you could pursue after graduation.

Here is our schedule for the quarter:

Developing Transferable Skills I: What skills are employers looking for?

4:30 PM on Wednesday, April 23 in FSH 207

Description: We will discuss the general skills that employers are looking for and how to figure out what specialized skills are required for the types of jobs you’re interested in. We will practice dissecting actual job ads to understand the qualifications that the employer is looking for, identify how your experience maps on to those qualifications, and also identify the gaps in your resume that you can seek to address with future experiences.

Developing Transferable Skills II: How do you develop desirable skills as an undergraduate?

4:30 PM on Wednesday, April 30 in FSH 207

Description: We will discuss opportunities to develop your resume and qualifications, with a focus on on-campus opportunities during the academic year. We will discuss how to inquire with established professionals about potential opportunities, the landscape of on-campus opportunities, and how to get involved with undergraduate research.

Looking ahead: Graduate school and first jobs after graduation

Time/location TBD, but sometime in May

Description: This session will feature a panel of current UW graduate students, who will talk about the types of jobs they worked before graduate school, why they decided to go to grad school, what life is like as a graduate student, and provide some tips on the graduate school application process.

LEAPS Office Hours:

Time/location TBD

Description: Opportunities to chat and connect with current UW graduate students
