Position Description
Seattle City Light, a department of the City of Seattle, is one of the nation’s largest municipally owned utilities in terms of the number of customers served. This position will be based at the Native Salmonid Conservation Facility (NSCF) in Usk, WA in Pend Oreille County.

The Hatchery Intern position for 2025 will assist and learn entry level biological data collection and animal husbandry skills while working on a conservation based native fishery restoration project supporting Boundary Dam FERC licensing obligations. The intern will work under the direction of the Hatchery Supervisor, Operator and Technician. Responsibilities will include assisting in preparing feed and feeding fish, ensuring fish health and safety, cleaning fish rearing vessels and facility, and implementing fish spawning, incubation, and maturation tasks.

Learning Objectives:

Field operations

  • Care and rearing of native wild westslope cutthroat trout
  • Practical applications of husbandry skills, monitoring and data collection of environmental information to support a healthy ecosystem and fishery restoration in the Pend Oreille Basin

Job Responsibilities

Project(s) Scope:

This position may assist SCL field staff with various environmental surveys that include but are not limited to:

  • Snorkeling surveys, water temperature monitoring, nighttime boat-based electrofishing surveys
  • Daytime backpack electrofishing surveys, remote telemetry station maintenance
  • Telemetry mobile surveys, netting and handling fish on foot in streams and via boat in reservoirs
  • Operating a backpack electrofishing unit
  • Ability to work in an outdoor setting and hike in rough terrain
  • Download instrument data, manually recording and entering data

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Undergraduate students will need to maintain a 2.0 GPA or above throughout the internship.

  • Current Washington State driver’s license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

Areas of Study:

Enrolled in an accredited certificate, 2-year or 4-year undergraduate program during their internship.

  • Enrolled in an academic program with focus on fisheries, fish ecology or physiology, aquaculture, natural resources, biology, zoology or related field.

Desired Qualifications:

You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities:

  • Understanding of basic water chemistry and water quality parameters important to sustaining aquatic organisms.
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated experience at a fish hatchery, conducting fish surveys, data collection and management.

Additional Information

The full salary range for this position is $21.78 per hour.

Internship Duration and Hours: Summer-only: The timeframe of this internship will be three months in duration, with either a May (semester schools) or June (quarter schools) 2025 start date. The candidate can work up to 40 hours/week during the summer.

Hybrid Work: The City has the expectation that interns will be readily available to report to onsite at work in Seattle in accordance with the current Mayoral mandate of a minimum of 3 days per week. Additional in-person work requirements are based on business need and determined by the hiring authority.

Interns must have a Washington State address and live in Washington State at the time of hire and for the duration of their employment.

Benefits: Interns do not receive benefits but can obtain a subsidized ORCA pass and accrue sick time that can be used after 90 days of employment.

Background Check: Job offers are contingent on the verification of credentials and other information required by the employment process, including the completion of a background check. The background check will involve a criminal history check, which includes conviction and arrest records in compliance with the Seattle’s Fair Chance Employment Ordinance, SMC 14.17 and the City of Seattle Personnel Rule 10.3.
