International Day of Women & Girls in Science – Feb 11
A couple of years ago, we made a video highlighting many of our women in science here at SAFS and Marine Biology. I’ll be doing something similar again this year to celebrate this UN recognized day on February 11, to showcase the contributions of our women in science.
If you would like to be involved, please send me a photo of you doing science (be this in the lab, in the field, in a classroom) and tell me what kind of scientist you are: marine biologist, ichthyologist, salmon ecologist, an aspiring oceanographer, science communicator – or whatever it may be! It would be great to include content from across our community – faculty, researchers, postdocs, students, staff.
An optional addition is to also send me a response to all/some of the following questions which I’ll use for a written story:
- What does it mean to you to be a woman in science?
- What inspired you to pursue science?
- Any aspirations for the field of STEM in the future that you would like to see, through the lens of greater representation? (this doesn’t have to be only seeing more women and girls in science)
- One of last year’s themes for the UN Day was about female leadership in science. If you have examples of this (personal or other women in science leadership that have inspired you), please share!
For those who don’t identify as women but are passionate about enhancing gender equality in STEM and actively work in this space, I would love to hear from you too for the written piece!
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Please send me content by Monday February 3 if you would like to be involved.
Thanks
Niamh
