Hi everyone, Ellie here, thanks for tuning in to my student takeover and I hope you guys enjoyed getting to see what fall quarter at Friday Harbor Labs looks like! If you missed it, here’s some more info on what I covered. First, I wanted to highlight the program I’m taking: Autumn Marine Studies, which includes FHL 450 Novel Marine Ecosystems, FHL 470 Research in Marine Biology, and BIOL 471 Comparative Anatomy and Physiology of Marine Organisms.

I showed some pictures from a scanning electron microscope we’re using in 471 and some of my favorite organisms I’ve seen, including a skate from a trawl we did on the Kittiwake. I talked about my field work experiences in FHL 450 and showed some snorkeling pictures of our field site at Argyle Lagoon, where we ran an experiment on clams.

I also mentioned my involvement on a research project (led by Dr. Karly Cohen) about Pacific sand lance on how their vertebrae change over time, as well as showed you some pictures of the CT scans we’ve done on these fascinating fish.

Autumn is a great season to be up here, and I hope you guys all get the chance to witness the magic of FHL in the fall. You can even carve a jack o’ lantern with an anglerfish on it.
