The USDA-ARS National Cold Water Marine Aquaculture Center in Orono, Maine is hiring a full-time, permanent laboratory technician to assist with genetic research of Atlantic salmon aquaculture. In this position, you will assist scientists conducting research that will solve problems limiting production efficiency of coldwater marine aquaculture.

The mission of the National Cold Water Marine Aquaculture Center is to conduct research that will solve problems limiting production efficiency of coldwater marine aquaculture. The current primary research focus is genetic improvement using an applied selective breeding program to increase efficiency and sustainability of Atlantic salmon culture.

Duties

  • Tabulates, statistically analyzes and summarizes genetic or genomic data using personal computers and software packages.
  • Performs routine and recurring molecular biology laboratory protocols and studies using a variety of specialized equipment.
  • Collects, prepares, evaluates, and verifies animal tissue and DNA samples and supporting records; Routinely compile data from various sources into databases.
  • Maintains inventory of chemicals, prepares solutions and reagents for use in the laboratory, field, or greenhouse.
  • Keeps detailed records of experimental data laboratory procedures.
  • Adapts, modifies or develops new techniques and/or procedures to satisfy the needs of the research project.
