Fisheries Liaison

Salary Range: $85,000.00 To 110,000.00 Annually 

Job Summary: The Fisheries Liaison will serve as an outward-facing representative to the fishing community and will primarily be responsible for developing and delivering and leading the implementation of our California fisheries program. This program will include a range of components, such as outreach, communication strategy engagement, project planning, fisheries science, and workforce development. This position may routinely require travel as well as non-traditional hours.

Job Duties:

  • Lead engagement with fisheries stakeholders for a Northern California lease area to ensure effective communication and good working relations across all relevant fishermen, fishing communities, organizations, sectors, regions/ports, and gear types
  • Develop and implement a fisheries program for all project phases, including site assessment, permitting, and construction and operations, focused on building collaborative and productive working relationships with the region’s fishermen and other impacted marine users
  • Coordinate fisheries communication plan updates and fisheries outreach activities with other offshore wind developers to minimize consultation burdens whenever appropriate
  • Identify potentially affected fisheries and work with these stakeholders to better understand their concerns, identify potential impacts, and arrive at workable solutions
  • Coordinate fisheries survey, research, monitoring, communication, and other activities with the Fisheries Manager, California Director of Environmental Affairs, and across internal teams
  • Readily available and accessible to fishermen via phone, email, social media, and in-person during and outside of regular business hours, and ensure follow-through on fishermen’s concerns
  • Ensure effective tracking and reporting of fisheries stakeholder engagement activities and fisheries stakeholder concerns
  • Lead and manage external consultants and service providers engaged in fisheries-related activities 

Job Requirements (Skills, knowledge, experience, education)

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher within the field of fisheries science/management or policy or a relevant field from an accredited program
  • Demonstrated experience working directly with California fishermen in the field, with a functioning knowledge of commercial and recreational fishermen, fisheries issues, and ports in Humboldt County strongly preferred
  • Minimum of five years of relevant work experience and an in-depth understanding of the fishing industry, practices, interests, and issues along the US West Coast
  • Understanding of fisheries management/policy across a range of commercial and recreational fisheries as well as experience working with state agencies in California
