Summary
This position is a Biological Science Laboratory Technician, specializing as a Laboratory Geneticist, GS- 0404-7 working in Longview, Washington for the R1-Abernathy Fish Technology Center.
Our laboratory is located in southwest Washington State, approximately 10 miles west of Longview. This position will work in our laboratory organizing genetic samples and biodata, extracting and sequencing DNA, and genotyping SNPs and microsatellites. Duties
The Pathways Recent Graduate Program is for recently graduated or graduating individuals who are looking for developmental experiences in the Federal Government intended to promote possible careers in the civil service. See the “Qualifications” and “Additional Information” section for more information.
As a Biological Science Laboratory Technician your duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Organize and verify the integrity of genetic sample archives, including working with external partners to verify associated biodata.
- Extract, quantify and normalize DNA from thousands of tissue samples per year.
- Genotype extracted DNA using multiple methods including microsatellite, single nucleotide polymorphism, Sanger sequencing and Illumina sequencing.
- Export genetic data from laboratory instruments and perform basic manipulation and archiving of the data.
- Perform genetic assignment tests to determine the origins of unknown samples and share results with internal and external partners.
Qualifications
Recent graduates
Individuals who have graduated from an accredited educational institute or certificate program within the last 2 years or 6 years for Veterans.
Clarification from the agency: U.S. Citizen or National and Recent graduates from a qualifying educational institution having completed an academic program within the preceding two years. Note: Veterans who were precluded by their military service obligation from meeting this requirement will have up to six years to apply.
Minimum Qualification [GS-07]
1. One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience may include: 1) Extracting, quantifying, and normalizing DNA from tissue samples; 2) Performing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to amplify DNA and genotype samples; and 3) Applying formal quality assessment / quality control (QA/QC) protocols to estimate genotyping (laboratory accuracy rates) accuracy and error rates; OR
2. One year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the one year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. NOTE: To qualify under this option you must submit transcripts (official or unofficial) to verify your education; OR
3. A combination of education and experience as described in 1 and 2 above which together equals 100% of the requirement. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. NOTE: To qualify under this option you must submit transcripts (official or unofficial) to verify your education.
