Summer Bursary Program, Marine Institute (Galway, Ireland)

Dear SAFS  / Marine Biology students,

I’m emailing you to mention that the Marine Institute in Galway, Ireland, has recently announced its 2023  summer bursary program. It’s an annual summer internship program aimed at giving undergraduates the opportunity to gain skills in a variety of marine science related fields. Fields include Fisheries and fish sampling, Oceanography, Chemistry and GIS / bathymetric mapping (The full list of bursaries offered is attached below). The program allows undergraduate students to learn and develop great hands-on experience and gain some brilliant field/practical skills. Also a chance to visit Ireland for a couple of months when the weather is at its best!  Please note that unless you are a holder of a current EU passport, a visa will be required. I should also mention that there are a number of salmon-specific projects focusing on Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar).

I  took part in the program as an undergraduate and found the experience fun, fulfilling and very beneficial to my career.  Bursaries are paid at a rate of 350 euro / week and vary in length from 8 – 12 weeks. and travel costs to Ireland are not covered. It should be noted, however, that the cost of living in Galway is significantly lower than in Seattle. To apply students must have two years of their undergraduate degree completed by the program start date. In addition to skills, the program will also give students the chance to interact with undergraduates from Ireland and other European countries.
