Field Technician Position – Alaska Salmon Program

The Alaska Salmon Program is hiring a Field Technician for Summer 2023. This is an opportunity to contribute to the longest-running salmon research program in the world and gain hands-on experience in freshwater, river, stream, and riparian aquatic ecosystem ecology.

Job Duties

  • Limnology:
    • Zooplankton hauls
    • Water temperature profiles
    • Chlorophyll-a analysis
  • Juvenile fish:
    • Beach seine nearshore lake fish community
    • Townet pelagic fish community
    • Stick seine stream fish community
    • Fyke net for outmigrating sockeye smolts
  • Adult salmonids:
    • Spawner surveys
    • DNA sampling
    • Mark-recapture and diet studies
  • Basic camp maintenance and living tasks, including:
    • Filling gas tanks
    • Painting buildings
    • Picking up people from the airport
    • Participate in cooking for the group
    • Cleaning common areas

Successful applicants must be able to safely lift up to 40lbs and be comfortable hiking up to 6 miles in moving water, wearing waders and stream boots, while carrying a ~20lb pack in all weather conditions.

40 hours/week, $18.69/hr
