Combining marine biology, creativity and science communication: student takeover with Samantha-Lynn

Welcome to the next student takeover! 2nd-year marine biology student, Samantha-Lynn Martinez, took over our Instagram and unpacked her exciting journey of combining design, illustration, camerawork, and science communication with her work here at UW, as well as outside of UW with research and marine science education gigs.

Samantha worked on an honors ad hoc project about how fishes hear with her instructor and curator of fishes at the Burke Museum, Luke Tornabene, over Autumn quarter. In this project, she combined all her skills to produce an educational video/lecture on the topic, learning materials, and activities for anyone to explore.

She aims to continue this science communication project beyond the scope of the initial topic, covering other obscure topics in science as she navigates her coursework for the rest of undergrad. More information about the ScattrLab series can be found here.

Aside from this project, Samantha discusses her work outside of UW, serving as a scientific advisor for Made in Puget Sound, and a graphic designer/illustrator for the Salish Sea School, Pacific Mammal Research, and other marine science education organizations in the area.

There are plenty more projects she is actively working on and hopes to start, so if you’re at all curious about the rest of her work you can watch the story takeover on the marine biology Instagram now, visit her site at samanthalynnmartinez.com, or send her questions through Instagram at @samanthalynnm_
