Linking Hydrology & Biogeochemistry in Wetland-Dominated Catchments

Collaborative NSF project: researchers at The Univ Maryland, Virginia Tech, and Univ Alabama Drs. Margaret Palmer [palmerlab.umd.edu], Daniel McLaughlin (VT) [frec.vt.edu], Erin Hotchkiss (VT) [hotchkisslab.com], Durelle Scott (VT) [scottlab.bse.vt.edu], and Nate Jones (UA) [ecohydrology.ua.edu] seek a research technician to join a highly collaborative project focused on understanding the relationship between wetlandscape hydrology and carbon biogeochemistry. Field and laboratory work involves integrating hydrology, ecosystem ecology, and biogeochemistry with the ultimate goal of informing wetland restoration and management across the coastal plain.

This position is through the University of Maryland in College Park, is available immediately and comes with full benefits. The person will help conduct field work in wetlands on the eastern shore of Maryland and complete laboratory analyses on the campus in College Park, MD. Work involves: maintaining sensors, wells, and sampling platforms; collecting and processing water and soil samples; managing the growing database from the projects; and, working with PIs and students.

Minimum Qualifications: undergraduate degree in environmental science or related discipline; some experience in collecting aquatic samples and completing chemical analyses using laboratory instrumentation (although, training on many instruments is available); enjoy the outdoors including sometimes long days in the field; strong interpersonal skills; enthusiasm over research!

Desired Qualifications: Experience in database management and in using R to run analyses; strong skills working with and trouble-shooting field equipment and instruments associated with measuring dissolved organic matter and gases, physicochemical parameters, etc.
