Short term help with snorkel, habitat, and RTK surveys (Issaquah, WA)

One of our field crew is out for the season and we are looking for a someone to help with habitat surveys, mapping with an RTK GPS, and conducting snorkel surveys from late August to late September in eastern Washington and Oregon. Position is based out of Issaquah, WA, but will travel will be from 7-10 days at time.

Focus: River Stream Surveys and Restoration Monitoring and Assessment

Location: Issaquah, WA with field sites in eastern Oregon and central Washington

Estimated Job Duration: ASAP through September 2022

Pay Rate: $22.00 per hour

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform hands-on field work including river and snorkel surveys, to estimate juvenile salmon abundance and collect data on the physical environment (e.g., water quality, channel bathymetry)
  • Perform habitat assessments including mapping of stream channels with a Total Station or Real-time Kinematic GPS (RTK GPS), and measuring and quantifying fish habitat, channel unit classification, large woody debris, substrate size, discharge, and water quality parameters using multiple protocols
  • Conduct data collection using tablets and paper data sheets, entry, and organization and basic summaries of fisheries and aquatic habitat related data
  • Organize field logistics, including preparing and maintaining equipment and supplies needed for field work
  • Assist Lead Biologists on various tasks including administrative tasks, data collection, literature reviews, data QA/QC and management and problem solving for various projects, studies, and other assignments
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

  • Must be comfortable working in the aquatic environment including wading in large rivers, streams, and wetlands covering up to six miles a day, swimming to perform snorkel surveys, collecting data from rafts or kayaks
  • Must be able to work effectively in inclement weather, including heat and sun, in remote locations
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Possible long periods of computerized data management in an office environment
  • Working irregular hours in various kinds of weather and potentially rugged terrain on occasion
  • Travel to remote areas for 2-10 days at a time
  • Ability to travel by car to field locations for two to ten hours, as a passenger and driver

Education/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate course work in Fisheries Science, Ecology, Environmental Science, or closely related field
  • Basic level proficiency with MS Office Suite (Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.)
  • Valid Driver’s License

Desired Qualifications:

  • General knowledge of Pacific Northwest fish biology, aquatic or plant ecology, fish habitat requirements, fluvial geomorphology and hydrology
  • Experience conducting stream habitat surveys (CHaMP or EMAP protocol)
  • Experience with surveying methods using a Total Station or RTK GPS
  • Basic experience using ArcGIS or QGIS
