The California Wetfish Producer’s Association (CWPA) is committed to sustainable fisheries, which rely on rigorous and accurate scientific data. The CWPA, in cooperation with NOAA’s Southwest Fisheries Science Center (SWFSC) and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), are seeking a qualified candidate to assist in fisheries related research, working with scientists at NOAA’s SWFSC, regarding the population dynamics and stock structure of Pacific Sardine in the southern California Bight. This project provides opportunity for collaboration on writing and analysis for publication in the scientific literature

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Work will be conducted under close supervision by scientists with NOAA SWFSC and the CWPA. Specific duties include:

  • Sampling of sardine from fishing vessels at selected ports across southern California
  • Processing of fish in laboratory setting for biological data
  • Data management including: data entry, data exploration, and statistical analysis
  • Collaboration on writing and analysis for publication in the scientific literature
  • Archival research into various data streams, both public access and proprietary records
  • Coordination and participation in small stakeholder meetings, both in-person and through video conferencing

Qualifications: BS or Masters in marine science or biological sciences. Consideration will be given for a candidate with strong, independent research skills and a desire to gain experience in research and publishing. Experience and familiarity with laboratory practices and statistical software packages are preferred. Candidate must have reliable transportation and a willingness to travel throughout southern California on a monthly basis. Strong organizational skills and management skills are necessary.
