FT-NIRS Biological Technician, IBSS (Narragansett, RI)

Description
IBSS is seeking a Biological Technician to assist with the preparation and scanning of various fisheries ageing structures using the Fourier transform near infrared spectrometer (FT-NIRS) methodology. The Biological Technician will support the NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center Population Biology Branch Apex Predators Program to collect samples and data to produce technical and research products that inform fisheries science and management of living marine resources. Support is needed to evaluate the feasibility of using FT-NIRS as the principle method of ageing for a variety of fish species.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collect, sort, identify, and preserve biological samples and data as required
- Inventory, clean, polish, and/or section ageing structures in preparation for age and growth studies
- Clean and measure ageing structures in preparation for FT-NIRS scanning
- Scan ageing structures for an assigned species using a FT-NIRS up to 5000 specimens a year
- Manage, organize, and archive samples
- QA/QC data and data entry, as needed
- Support senior scientists/biologists with analysis and research of spectral data for scientific publications and attend training/meetings/workshops/symposiums as required
- Ensure laboratory equipment is maintained
- Participate in field surveys as needed (up to 50 days per year) to assist in the collection of oceanographic and biological samples and data
REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma with 1-2 years’ experience using FT-NIRS methodology and equipment, or an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in a related field
- Experience with microscopes, image analysis systems, lapidary saws, and/or electronic data entry systems
- Experience in the identification of finfish and elasmobranch species commonly encountered along the Atlantic coast from Nova Scotia to Cape Hatteras
- Medically qualified and physically able to go to sea for more than one week at a time
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (i.e., Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access)
- Good oral and written communication skills
