Idaho Fish and Game Hiring Two Temporary Rotary Screw Trap Technicians

Idaho Fish and Game is now hiring for two temporary Rotary Screw Trap Technician positions for the 2026 field season, with opportunities based at Rapid River Hatchery near Riggins, Idaho, and in Stanley, Idaho. These roles run from July through early November and offer hands-on field experience ideal for recent graduates with a BS in Fisheries or related fields.

About the Positions

Technicians will assist with Idaho Salmon and Steelhead Monitoring and Evaluation studies by operating rotary screw traps to capture juvenile Chinook salmon and Steelhead. Core duties include PIT tagging, measuring and weighing fish, collecting genetic and scale samples, mounting scales for aging, recording biological data, routine data QA/QC, and maintaining field equipment, camp trailers, and vehicles.

The Stanley based position also supports Chinook salmon spawning ground surveys in the fall, while the Rapid River position includes additional hatchery fish culture responsibilities.

Work Environment and Schedule

Technicians typically work an eight days on and six days off schedule. Work occurs outdoors in cold water and variable weather conditions and may require lifting at least 60 pounds. Both positions include agency provided housing and transportation during work shifts only. Housing is not provided on days off.

  • Rapid River Hatchery (Riggins, Idaho)
    Located seven miles from Riggins at the base of the Seven Devils Mountains, the hatchery is among the largest spring Chinook spawning and rearing facilities in Idaho.
  • Stanley, Idaho
    Situated in the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, the Stanley Basin offers access to Marsh Creek and the upper Salmon River, where technicians operate two screw traps.

Position Requirements

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, hold a valid driver’s license, and be proficient with Windows based software. Experience with fish identification, data recording, and working independently is strongly preferred. A BS in Fisheries or related experience is recommended.
