The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences (BIOS) offers a suite of university-level summer courses, designed to immerse students in the study of marine science, with a program of coursework and research that is unique in marine science education.

Founded in 1903, BIOS is a world-class ocean science research and education facility (www.bios.edu). BIOS summer courses in marine science provide undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to expand their studies into tropical and subtropical environments and/or to investigate topics in ocean science, which are not offered within the curricula of their home institutions. BIOS has quick and easy access to a diverse array of tropical marine habitats which, combined with lectures, discussions and integrated field work and laboratory exercises, provide an optimal environment for experiential learning.

2016 Summer Courses at BIOS

  • Modern Observational Oceanography (July 4 – July 22)
  • Coral Reef Ecology: Reef Response to Environmental Change (July 11th – July 29)
  • Ecology and Evolution of Reef Fishes (August 8 -26)

Students may obtain academic credit for these courses, pending exchange of information between BIOS and the student’s home institution.

Course details and the 2016 application instructions are now available on the website: www.bios.edu/education/summer-courses/. The deadline to submit applications is April 17th, 2016. Late applications will be accepted only if the course is not full and considered on a first-come, first-served basis.

BIOS summer course scholarships are available to students of all nationalities, both undergraduates and graduates. Information on scholarships is available on our summer course webpage.

Summer 2016 Course: Biology & Biodiversity of Fishes of NW Florida & the Gulf of Mexico

Course Description

ZOO 4454 & ZOO 5935 (4 hrs)
Prerequisites: Core Biology Courses (e.g., BSC 2010, BSC 2011 lectures & labs or their equivalents, or permission of the instructor)

This course provides an overview of the evolution, systematics, morphology, ecology, physiology, and life history of the most diverse group of vertebrates on earth, the fishes. Subjects will be presented through highly-illustrated lectures, diverse field experiences and a series of laboratory exercises.

The field component is quite strong, introducing students to estuarine, marine, and freshwater habitats in the region. Students will gain hands-on experience with capture methods for species ranging from small stream fishes to large sharks.
