FAVORITE CLASS YOU TOOK FOR THE MARINE BIOLOGY MAJOR AND WHY?
In summer 2023, I took the course FHL492 at Friday Harbor Labs under Dr. Eric M. Anderson and Dr. William B. Tyler. With the help of our amazing professors, my teammate and I designed and conducted a compelling research project on the diurnal and nocturnal foraging behaviors of harbor seals. This experience not only provided me with the necessary skills to succeed in my future, but it also strengthened my passion for marine mammals and motivated me to continue working in research. If I could do it all over again, I would do it in a heartbeat!

WHAT WAS YOUR BEST MEMORY OR EXPERIENCE WITH THE MARINE BIOLOGY PROGRAM?
One of the most amazing experiences that I have had with the Marine Biology program, was partaking in the Identity, Belonging and Inquiry in Science program (IBIS) here at the UW, where I got placed into the Applied Ecology Lab led by Dr. Mark Scheuerell, working with one of his PhD students, Markus Min. Coming into the lab, I knew I wanted to enhance my understanding of modeling our ecosystems, and how graduate school works, but what I got out of the program was so much more than this. The Applied Ecology Lab community took me in and showed me not only what collaborative research looks like, but they also chatted with me as if I were at their same academic level and became my very dear friends. I have learned so much about myself as a researcher and have been able to build incredible quantitative skills to set me up for a career in this field. I would not be where I am, or who I am, today without this incredible group of people as my support system, both within the Lab and the Marine Biology program broadly. For that, I am incredibly grateful and honored to have worked with each and every individual here.
FAVORITE CLASS YOU TOOK FOR THE MARINE BIOLOGY MAJOR AND WHY?
One of the most inspirational courses I have taken here through the UW, was FISH 454, an introduction to quantitative ecology course taught by Dr. Tim Essington. I came into this class having had some experience with modeling and coding, but thrilled to learn more about the thought processes behind this science and how decisions within this field are made. I was still greatly intimidated by this kind of quantitative work though, as I realized there was still a lot that I had to learn. Dr. Essington, however, made this class one of the most approachable classes I have ever taken, and greatly inspired me not only within the field itself but also in learning how to be a facilitator of science as a whole. The dedication he showed to each and every one of his students, whether it was answering numerous questions or repeating concepts until we all understood them, taught me what it means to invest not just in the science, but also the people you work with, as this is truly what facilitates the work of science reaching it’s full potential. I now look forward to driving this energy that was inspired through this class forward, and pursuing a quantitative ecology degree in the future, to hopefully one day inspire and encourage the communication of quantitative science in the way that Dr. Essington showed me is possible.
WHAT ARE YOUR CURRENT PLANS POST-GRADUATION?
Now that my time here at UW as an undergraduate student is coming to a close, it is my goal to expand on the quantitative skills that I was able to build during my time here. I am planning on spending some time doing field work and getting my hands on as much data analysis work within the first years of graduating as I can, to get a better understanding of what my data and the data collection process looks like in the field. After two years of this, it is my plan to go to graduate school to pursue a PhD in quantitative ecology, where, after the completion of this, I then hope to pursue a career in this field on the federal side, within the quantitative ecology sector.
