Favorite class you took for the Marine Biology major and why?
I loved FSH 311 with Luke! I never really had an interest in fish before taking his class. I preferred invertebrates. But studying fish anatomy was fascinating and the lectures were always fun! I learned so much and gained a deep appreciation for his diverse and amazing fishes are!
What are your current plans post-graduation?
I’ll be working as a biologist for an engineering firm in Alaska, conducting wetland delineations.

Favorite class you took for the Marine Biology major and why?
MARBIO 488 – Marine Biology in the Field at FHL was definitely my favorite class. This was my only in-person class in the last two years and being at the Friday Harbor Labs was incredibly refreshing. I was able to design and execute my own experiments and focus on the ecology of my surrounding environment. From collecting specimens to having my own lab, I felt immersed in the scientific community and had one of the best learning experiences across my entire collegiate career.
MacKenna Marshawn Davis

Aurora Doty
Bachelor of Science, Major in Marine Biology; Minor in Spanish
Ruth W. Drinkwater
Bachelor of Science, Majors in Marine Biology and Aquatic and Fishery Sciences
What are your current plans post-graduation?
I am planning on attending Albany Law School to study environmental law and climate change policy!
Megan Mackenzie Ewing
Bachelor of Science, Major in Marine Biology; Minor in Art History
Favorite class you took for the Marine Biology major and why?
Fish 311 because the labs were so hands-on and I learned so much about fishes!
Shelby Fox
Bachelor of Science, Major in Marine Biology
What are your current plans post-graduation?
I am currently working with rainbow trout at an aquaculture facility, but I plan to keep working towards my PhD over the years to come. I would love to work with marine megafauna, preferably with whales or manatees, but for now I will be learning as much as possible about the ins and outs of aquaculture and trout.
Mia Haney-Marshall
Bachelor of Science, Major in Marine Biology
Favorite class you took for the Marine Biology major and why?
Deborah Giles Marine Mammal biology class because we got first-hand experience with Orcas and other marine mammals
Kaitlan Miyuki Harbaugh
Bachelor of Science, Major in Marine Biology
Favorite class you took for the Marine Biology major and why?
I really enjoyed FISH 464 – it was challenging, but I loved learning both about the animals and the people who have lived alongside them for generations. Gaining cultural insight along with the biology was a really great experience.
Kellen Hardcastle
Bachelor of Science, Major in Marine Biology
Favorite class you took for the Marine Biology major and why?
Functional Morphology and Ecology of Marine Fishes
Katie Jones
Bachelor of Science, Major in Marine Biology
Favorite class you took for the Marine Biology major and why?
FISH 323 with Tim Essington. I think it’s one of the classes where I really learned the most, I absorbed a lot of the info, and for an online class, it was kept very engaging. Also, the professor is a really cool guy
Hannah Kieler
Bachelor of Science, Majors in Marine Biology and Aquatic and Fishery Sciences
Marissa E. Leatherman
Bachelor of Science, Majors in Marine Biology and Oceanography
What are your current plans post-graduation?
I wrote a pitch to continue to work I started on my undergraduate thesis that was funded. For the next half year, I will be working as a Post-Baccalaureate Researcher in the School of Oceanography studying copper pollution in Puget Sound. After that, I plan to work another (unknown) job as I apply to go to grad school for my PhD next year (2022-2023).
Parker Lehman
Bachelor of Science, Majors in Marine Biology and Aquatic and Fishery Sciences; Minor in Quantitative Science
Favorite class you took for the Marine Biology major and why?
It is so hard to pick just one! If I had to pick, I would say Fisheries Ecology (fish 312). The class offered outdoor field sampling trips, which furthered my learning of how an ecosystems work.
James Leifer
Bachelor of Science, Major in Marine Biology; Bachelor of Arts, Major in Anthropology: Archaeological Sciences
Favorite class you took for the Marine Biology major and why?
FHL 375 Marine Mammals of the Salish Sea. It was the first time I saw whales and it led to a short stint of collecting whale poop with Professor Deborah Giles
Allen Jared Liu
Bachelor of Science, Major in Marine Biology; Minor in Quantitative Science
Christine Mantegna
Bachelor of Science, Major in Marine Biology
Favorite class you took for the Marine Biology major and why?
(MARBIO 488) Marine Bio in the field w/ Dr. Jose Guzman – we get to put some of this knowledge to practical use, we were at Friday Harbor Labs, and Jose is an excellent professor – 488 has the awesomeness trifecta that’s hard to beat.

Emily Poulin
Bachelor of Science, Majors in Marine Biology and Biology: Physiology
What was your best memory or experience with the Marine Biology program?
I was fortunate to have spent five terms at Friday Harbor Laboratories during my time as an undergrad, and these experiences have inspired me to pursue a graduate degree so that I can continue conducting marine research projects. I have formed many lifelong friendships through the courses I have taken at FHL, and it was a great way to build a community with other students in the marine biology major. Some of my favorite memories from FHL were having bonfires on the beach, going on boat trips, and spending time in the lab with cool animals.

Favorite class you took for the Marine Biology major and why?
In-person: Fish 270. I felt like I learned a ton and I enjoyed the way Jose taught the class. I also made a good friend in my lab period. Zoom: Fish 370. Probably one of the better zoom classes, by far the most interactive. I also loved fish 444 with Dr. Hauser. He calls on people like crazy! It was super fun to have a class where people spoke often especially in the world of zoom.
Nicholas Smith
Bachelor of Science, Major in Marine Biology
Samuel S Strauss
Bachelor of Science, Major in Marine Biology
What was your best memory or experience with the Marine Biology program?
Aside from all of the amazing inspiration I received from so many professors and fellow students alike, the marine bio BBQ was AWESOME. Just being part of an academic community that comes together to socialize and interact in a non-academic context is really special.
Mei Sulistio
Bachelor of Science, Major in Marine Biology
Celine Tang

Quinn Murray Wilson
Bachelor of Science, Major in Marine Biology; Minor in Hellenic Studies
What was your best memory or experience with the Marine Biology program?
The best experience was going to Friday Harbor Labs in the spring of 2019 and making lifelong friends! Also, seeing a pod of killer whales hunt and eat a sea lion was pretty stellar too (haha get it?)
