Overview: Cramer Fish Sciences currently has an opening for a Seasonal Biological Technician.  The focus of this seasonal assignment will be to conduct stream habitat surveys in the backcountry of Northwestern Washington forests in the upper Skagit River, and tributaries of Ross Lake using USFS Level II survey methods. Field work will be conducted in two-person teams on a 7-day-on, 5-day-off rotation. Lodging will be provided for the 7-day working period for portions of the fieldwork. However, a large portion of the work will involve backcountry camping. Field work will be supervised from the CFS Fish Ecology Lab in Portland, OR.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform stream habitat surveys following USFS Level II surveys for classifying and measuring attributes of channel units, large wood, gradient, substrate size, discharge and water quality parameters, and measurements of streamside vegetation conditions.
  • Provide support in collecting fish distribution data with a backpack electrofisher and collect fish tissues.
  • Conduct data collection, entry, organization, and QA/QC.
  • Prepare and organize the upkeep of all equipment and supplies needed for field work.
  • Hiking to and working in remote field sites in the North Cascasdes. Ability to navigate in remote locations

 Education/Minimum Qualifications:   

  • Undergraduate course work in Fisheries Science, Ecology, Environmental Science, physical or biological sciences, or related field.
  • Basic level proficiency with MS Office Suite.
  • Valid driver’s license.

 Desired Qualifications:

  • General knowledge of Pacific Northwest fish biology, aquatic or plant ecology, fish habitat requirements, fluvial geomorphology, and hydrology.
  • Experience backpacking/camping in remote locations.
  • Experience conducting stream habitat surveys.
  • Experience operating a backpack electrofisher and fish handling.
  • Experience operating power boats with outboard motors.
  • Experience using GPS.
  • First Aid certified (Wilderness First Responder certification preferred).
  • State issued boating license.

The Shellfish Environmental Monitoring Assistant positions support the mission by conducting environmental sampling for the marine biotoxin and Vibrio parahaemolyticus programs. Without preventative sampling for marine biotoxins, we could not close shellfish growing areas to prevent illness.

The mission of the Office of Environmental Health & Safety (OEHS) is to improve the health of people in Washington State by reducing and preventing, where possible, human exposures to a variety of environmental hazards and disease pathogens associated with the disposal of wastewater, the food we eat, the schools our children attend, and the places we recreate and overnight.

These are two full-time, non-permanent Environmental Specialist 1 positions. The duration is three (3) months from the date of hire.

The duty station for this position is in Tumwater, WA. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, telework (mobile-work) is currently expected. When approved to return, the incumbent is expected to report to the duty station for work activities. Partial telecommuting may be an option subject to supervisory approval.

Duties Include
•    Planning and scheduling field sampling.

Solicitation for the 2022 IPHC Merit Scholarship

SEATTLE – The International Pacific Halibut Commission (IPHC) funds several Merit Scholarships to support university, technical college, and other post-secondary education. The scholarship fund has been established to assist the further education of Canadian and U.S.A. students connected to the Pacific halibut fishery and its industry. Generally, a single new scholarship valued at US $4000 per year is awarded every two years. The scholarships are renewable annually for the normal four-year period of undergraduate education, subject to maintenance of satisfactory academic performance. A committee of industry and Commission representatives reviews applications and determines recipients based on academic qualifications, career goals, and relationship to the Pacific halibut industry.

DESCRIPTION

Function as liaison between scientific party and ship’s crew while on research expeditions. Oversee deck operations, equipment stowage, and handling of scientific samples. Oversee loading and unloading of science equipment on research ships.   • Possible long periods of computerized data management in an office environment
  • Working irregular hours in various kinds of weather and potentially rugged terrain on occasion

Education/Minimum Qualifications:   

  • Undergraduate course work in Fisheries Science, Ecology, Environmental Science, or closely related field
  • Basic level proficiency with MS Office Suite (Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.)
  • Valid Driver’s License

Desired Qualifications:

  • General knowledge of Pacific Northwest fish biology, aquatic or plant ecology, fish habitat requirements, fluvial geomorphology and hydrology
  • Experience conducting stream habitat surveys (CHaMP or EMAP protocol)
  • Experience with surveying methods using a Total Station or RTK GPS
  • Basic experience using ArcGIS or QGIS

We are hiring a Natural Resource Specialist with a background in aquaculture. We are also hoping this individual will be capable of leading guest programing and maintaining ponds. The main duties, are not accurately described on the website listing. Responsibilities

  • Assist in developing and implementing guest and resident interactive programs and tours utilizing all the natural resource assets of the Resort and ahupua’a of Ka’upulehu.
  • Conduct aquaculture operations with all Resort seafood products including construction and maintenance of life-support and holding systems, husbandry duties, harvesting and delivery.
  • Provide maintenance services for any of the water features within Ka’upulehu as needed and assigned by the Director of Natural Resources.
  • Assist in maintaining all of the equipment and tools of the Natural Resources Department.
    Promote all our marine programs and our Resort conservation and stewardship activities.

Desired Qualifications and Skills

  • Ability to carry 50 lbs.
  • Ability to swim 50 ft.
  • College degree in marine science, marine ecology marine biology, or closely related field.
  • Experience in developing and implementing education programs. In addition, the individual must be able to demonstrate the ability to interact and communicate very well with Resort guests, residents, and school and community groups.
  • Enthusiastic, positive and highly outgoing, with a great desire to learn, improve, and achieve.
  • A good understanding of basic water quality, Hawaiian fish identification and ecological concepts.
  • Ability to work occasionally in an office setting with skills in word processing, and spreadsheet applications.
  • Good organizational skills, with the ability to work independently, and plan proactively.
  • High work ethic, with a keen sense of responsibility for the role filled within a team dynamic.
    A valid drivers license.
  • Successful candidate must possess legal work authorization in United States
